The Classic Rock Awards - Creating a Brighter Future

The partners of the Classic Rock Awards (CRA) met on November 18 and confirmed that, following universal artist support, the Classic Rock Awards will remain in Tokyo. A 90-minute edited broadcast of the event, which took place on November 11 at Ryogoku Kokugikan Stadium in Tokyo, Japan will be seen around the world in over 40 markets internationally. The CRA partners, TeamRock, KLab Entertainment and Parallel Contemporary Music (PCM), will meet again in 2017 to confirm details of the 2017 event.

Billy Anderson, CEO of TeamRock stated, “The Classic Rock Awards 2016 was a huge success, involving both artists playing and artists presenting. It was fantastic to receive so much support from rock fans around the world. I would like to thank all of the rock fans in Japan who attended this year’s event for helping to take the Classic Rock Awards to another level.”

David Ciclitira, Chairman of PCM said, “As soon as I had heard that Tokyo had won the right to host the Olympic games, it seemed natural to take the Classic Rock Awards, “the Oscars of rock,” to Tokyo and to find a way to include it as part of the 2020 celebrations. It has been an amazing experience working together with such a great team, I would personally like to single out Mr. Sanada–the CEO of KLab Entertainment–for having the vision to bring an idea to reality.”

Sanada, CEO of KLab Entertainment said, “This was quite a learning experience for us this year. I was humbled by the support we received from the Japanese rock community. We will use what we learned from the Classic Rock Awards 2016 to bring everyone an even better event next year.”

The partners said, “There can be no doubt that the fans who left the stadium on November 11 experienced something truly unique. At the same time, we recognize that there has been some misunderstanding as to who was due to present and who was playing. To settle this issue, we would like to offer all of the fans who attended this year’s event exclusive priority access and a discount of the ticket price for next year’s event. For anyone that was in any way disappointed, we will be happy to refund their ticket.”

Details on how to request your benefits will be placed on KLab Entertainment’s official website: HERE

The partners will meet once again early next year in Tokyo to confirm the details of the 2017 event in order to bring rock fans around the world the chance to visit Tokyo and to experience another night of legendary performances by the biggest artists in rock at the Classic Rock Awards 2017.

About the Classic Rock Awards

In the late 19th Century American impresario Phineas Taylor ‘P.T.’ Barnham coined the phrase “The Greatest Show On Earth”. In rock’n’roll terms, that’s exactly from where Classic Rock’s annual awards ceremony takes its inspiration.

Since its inception in July 2005, the Classic Rock Roll Of Honour has become a solid-gold highlight of the calendar year. Our first star-studded show took place in the intimate surroundings of London's Café De Paris. On a memorable night in '05, Motörhead mainman Lemmy Kilmister was proclaimed our very first Living Legend; he even played an acoustic set in celebration. We honoured Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Arthur Brown, Ian Hunter, while Led Zeppelin legend Jimmy Page was just happy to be in the audience.

Now into its second decade, the Roll Of Honour has established itself as the go-to, must-see event for the global rock fraternity.

Following in Lemmy’s booted heels, further Living Legends have included Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop, Rush, Jeff Beck, ZZ Top, Black Sabbath, Gregg Allman, Queen... Oh, and James Patrick Page, of course.

Over the years we’ve had many Classic Albums (The Who’s Quadrophenia, Def Leppard’s Hysteria, Meat Loaf’s Bat Out Of Hell...); a myriad of Metal Gurus (Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Scorpions...); a barrage of Best New Bands (Black Stone Cherry, The Temperance Movement, The Cadillac Three...). The list goes on!

From the outset, we’ve augmented the prize-giving experience with exclusive live performances. We’ve experienced storming sets from Kings Of Chaos (featuring Brian May, Joe Elliott, Billy Gibbons, Joe Perry, Sammy Hagar, Duff McKagan, Matt Sorum, Glenn Hughes and Nuno Bettencourt), The Darkness, Cheap Trick, Alter Bridge (with Slash as guest), Jeff Beck (with Joss Stone and Chrissie Hynde), Joe Bonamassa, Rival Sons, Scott Weiland and his Wildabouts, Lynyrd Skynyrd...

We’ve also enjoyed a series of magnificent masters of ceremony: past Roll Of Honour hosts include Sammy Hagar, Gene Simmons, Fish, Duff McKagan and Alice Cooper.

The Roll Of Honour has grown exponentially over the years and found its spiritual home at the capital’s legendary Roundhouse. In 2014 the ceremony relocated relocated to California for its 10th anniversary, taking place at the Avalon in Hollywood, the iconic venue where in 1964 The Beatles played their first performance on the US West Coast. Now 2016 sees another global jaunt – this time to Tokyo, Japan.

The Greatest Show On Earth is about to become greater than ever!

About Classic Rock Magazine

Although you’d scarcely have gauged the fact by visiting the newsagent, 1998 was still a memorable year for those who liked their music on the louder side. The ex-Led Zeppelin duo of Page & Plant had headlined the Reading Festival, and Ozzy and Black Sabbath cleaned up as the Ozzfest reached the UK for the first time. But it was clear that a passionate group of music fans was no longer being catered for by the trend-obsessed mainstream printed media...

For a small but experienced and determined group of music writers – backed by a sympathetic publishing executive – the time for grumbling ceased. An effort had to be made to redress the balance... a rock magazine for grown-ups, anyone?

And thus, after months of heated debate over its contents in a small basement in London, the first issue of Classic Rock magazine hit the stands as a one-off publication on September 24, 1998. Priced at £2.50, its 68 pages featured Genesis, Brian May, the still-solo Bruce Dickinson, Hootie & The Blowfish, the Manic Street Preachers, Deep Purple and (whisper it quietly) Shania Twain, with Guns N’ Roses as cover stars.

Vowing to “assess everything from Van Halen to Vangelis, from Rush to Radiohead, from Kiss to Kula Shaker, from Ash to Wishbone Ash, with fair but critical eyes and ears”, the diverse stance was intentional. So positive was the response from that first issue that a follow-up was commissioned, and from there onwards, Classic Rock began to take on a life of its own. Now 18 years (and countless world-exclusive interviews and features) later, the magazine is now a part of TeamRock and has expanded into far more than a print product: it has a huge online global presence, a radio show, sponsored tours – but its double- barrelled manifesto of treating rock artists with the respect they deserve as well as tirelessly seeking new talent to fit the blueprint continues to be its lifeblood.

The mighty Classic Rock now bears scant comparison to the publication cobbled together on a wing and a prayer in that central London basement but the thought process is unchanged: it’s all about the music.

Why Tokyo?

Welcome to the launch of this year’s Classic Rock Awards, Classic Rock magazine’s annual ceremony to honour of rock’s greatest icons, musicians and songwriters. In 2005 we first held the show in London, then we took it to Hollywood and I can think of nowhere more exciting to host its 12th year than Tokyo – another of rock’s spiritual homes and one with a fantastic rock heritage.

Success in Japan has long been the mark of achievement for any western band wishing to truly make it in their careers and that ambition has only been matched by the quality and brilliance of rock that Japan has produced. This year we will be celebrating both and we cannot wait to see you on November 11th.

Classic Rock magazine is everywhere for everyone: flying the flag for rock in all its forms – from the classics to the brand new artists – and in 2016 we humbly bring you the Classic Rock Awards!
